Web Accessibility

1.2 billion people globally report having a disability, and people with disabilities in the U.S. control aggregate annual income of > $1 trillion*

The focus of our business is Web Accessibility. It is the practice of making web pages on the internet accessible to all users, especially those with different abilities of all kinds. Making your online services and products accessible means making them available to the broadest range of users which ultimately can boost your bottom line and allow everyone the right to access information in the same manner.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (1990) states "reasonable accommodations" must be made in meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities. It now applies to online services. The Rehabilitation Act Section 508 (1998) requires that groups with disabilities have comparable access to and use of information and data that is provided online.

Accessible Web Design...

The practice of designing web pages on the Internet so they are accessible to all users, especially those with disabilities.
This primary audience consists of users who are:
- blind
- sight impaired
(e.g. common types of poor eyesight and color blindness)
- motor impaired
(e.g. Parkinson's Disease, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, stroke)
- cognitively impaired
(i.e. dyslexia or poor short-term memory)
- hearing impaired or deaf -
non-native speakers of the web site's language (s), including users of sign languages

Individuals would have the ability to perceive, understand, navigate, interact and contribute with and to the world wide web and society.
It is giving older people with limited abilities due to aging, access to knowledge, health care, other services and the world around them.

It encompasses all disabilities that affect access to the Web, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, neurological and technological. Making your online services accessible means making them available to the broadest possible range of users, including those with disabilities of all kinds.

"Web Accessibility and WAI-ARIA Primer"

Figures as high as 81 percent - the number of websites that are inaccessible. This comes from a lack of understanding about the importance of web accessibility, and a lack of knowledge regarding implementation of accessibility guidelines. However, figures from A List Apart’s 2008 Survey for People Who Make Websites, 46% of respondents say they have accessibility knowledge.
Although 46% isn’t a horrible number, ther is no way it is represents all web designers and developers. I'm pretty sure the number is much lower in reality. And just as Emily says, 'just because a person believes he has accessibility knowledge, doesn’t automatically translate to implementation. So, let’s try and change this!"

" ... the discomfort of not knowing is an essential part of the process of creativity and change. The truth is that we rarely know as much as we think we do -- or as much as we wish we did -- so we might as well find some humor and ease in the fact that we are always in the unknown."
-- Nina Utne
